We adapt the incursion program to work with the year level/s (P-6) participating and the focus of the unit of work.

Here is just a brief look into how we can meet the needs of any unit or class topic.

Prep/FoundationLiving things have basic needs, including food and water.  Using props we demonstrate what the caterpillar and butterfly eats and the resources needed to complete the life cycle.

Years 1 and 2Living things have a variety of external features and live in different places to meet their needs. We use props and dress ups to demonstrate butterfly body parts and their functions. We have a large, interactive habitat mat that covers environmental needs of insects and minibeasts.

Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves. We cover life cycles with a focus on butterflies and complete metamorphosis.

Years 3 and 4 Living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features.  We cover characteristics of insects and demonstrate how not all invertebrates are insects.

Living things have life cycles and depend on each other and the environment to survive.  We use a butterfly to demonstrate life cycles with a fully interactive presentation. Each stage of the life cycle utilises different aspects of the environment which makes it a great example for this unit.

Years 5 and 6 Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment.  Caterpillars have amazing adaptations for survival that allows us to delve into the world of camouflage and warning colours. Something students always enjoy learning about!
The growth and survival of living things are affected by physical conditions of their environment.   Butterflies are fantastic bioindicators and relay very heavily on the health of an environment to thrive.

The Butterfly Adventures Primary Incursion Programs are designed by qualified scientists and teachers with over 20 years experience and follow the Australia Curriculum.
Our highly interactive hands-on programs begin with an engaging presentation that covers life cycles and insect morphology (body parts) with a focus on butterflies.  From here, small rotation groups are set up to move through our fun educational activity stations (year level/topic specific) which includes our Live Butterfly Tent, Science activity table, Art/Craft table, Word table, Book table, Explore table.

Our experienced and qualified educators will work with you to tailor a presentation to suit your needs, unit of work and the year level of your students. Whether your unit is Life Cycles, Minibeasts – how they grow and change, their features, adaptations and role in food chains.

The students will become butterfly experts and learn amazing fun facts along the way.  Everyone gets to see and feed a butterfly. Plenty of photo opportunities!  They will talk about this exciting incursion for weeks to come.

The presentations are linked to AusVELS levels from foundation to Level 6.

Upon booking you will receive a PDF file with pre- and post-incursion lesson plans and activities.
