Chrysalis Kit

$44.00$100.00 inc. GST

Hatch your own butterfly and let it free. An amazing Butterfly Experience!

The available enclosure options are a sinamay cube (left) or a small pop up (right) that can be stored flat and used to house other insects.

** Orchard Swallowtail Chrysalis – 20th June onwards.  These are ONLY for locations that have daily temperatures above 22 degrees  and will need a small pop up enclosure due to their delicate wings – Orchard Swallowtails can go into diapause at this time of the year so may take 4-8 weeks to emerge**

**  Monarchs will be available again for all states in Spring – Date to be advised .  For the colder states this is usually early October**

The Butterfly Adventures Chrysalis kit is a unique, butterfly hatching kit, which gives you the experience of seeing a chrysalis (pupa) turning into a gorgeous butterfly.

Your butterfly will emerge from the chrysalis within 4-12 days, based on the temperature of your room/space and transit temperatures.

Evoke those childhood memories of ‘a wish upon the wing’ by whispering your wish to the butterfly before releasing it. (Butterfly Adventures guarantees that the wish will be carried up to the sky and come true…:)

The kit is a perfect birthday, housewarming, or special occasion gift.

The Chrysalis kit is also great for the classroom! The kit provides an educational and hands-on experience, while you study your Life Cycle and Minibeasts units.

Butterflies are a popular and safe insect that all kids can relate to. Exploring the butterfly life cycle is a perfect example of an insect’s complete metamorphosis; from egg, to larva (caterpillar), to pupa (chrysalis), and finally the adult butterfly.

For curriculum based activities have a look at our chrysalis kit related lesson plans. Plans are individually tailored from Kinder to Year 6.

Here Dr Harry himself is explaining how the kit works:

How long does it take to deliver?

We do our best to send your items out by your selected delivery date. However, nature can sometimes impact on their life cycle so changes may need to be made.

To minimise transit time, we send kits via Express Post*.  We will send all orders at the beginning of the week to hopefully ensure delivery in the chosen week. This may mean your order may arrive on, before or after your chosen date.  Email updates will be sent directly to you from Australia Post.

*Australia Post notification: Next-business-day guarantee currently suspended – Express Post remains our fastest postal service.

Will I always get the same chrysalis?

Our most common and popular kits are Monarch chrysalises (see images below), but depending on the time of year, availability is limited. Please let us know if you specifically want a Monarch, but this could mean a longer wait. Our other kits will also hatch beautiful butterflies.

The chrysalises in the hatching kits may be green or brown, smooth or slightly spiked, and some may even wriggle!

Releasing or keeping your butterflies.

Butterflies require 20⁰C or higher to fly.  They will be sleepy (i.e. not fly) at lower temperatures.

Two days after hatching, please release your butterflies as soon as possible. They are flying insects and the small hatching enclosures are not suitable for them.  If your butterflies can’t be released, due to cold temperatures or injury, please DO NOT keep them in the mesh cube enclosure, for longer than 1-2 days. Make or find a larger enclosure for them or buy one from our shop.  You will  also have to start feeding your butterflies. Don’t worry, it’s easy (and fun!) to feed butterflies.

Soak a paper towel in sugary water (1-2 teaspoons of sugar per glass of water) and place it on top of the enclosure. Butterflies are attracted to light and always hang out at the top of an enclosure, so place the soaked paper towel there.

Alternatively, you can get your butterflies to walk on a cotton wool balls soaked in sugary water. As soon as they step on their liquid lunch, their proboscis begin to unroll, meaning they can taste and absorb the food.

Remember to mist the mesh of your enclosure with water to keep the butterflies hydrated (a spray-top bottle is all you need).

What if things go wrong?

The birth of a butterfly, like the birth of any living creature, is a rather delicate process. We wish we could say that there is 100% guarantee of success, but that would be unrealistic. What we can guarantee is that we will be here to answer your questions, support you, and in a rare case of the birth going wrong, we will replace your chrysalis.
